How and why did I become a therapeutic counsellor?
Before retiring in 2009 aged 39 due to ill-health, I had worked in both the private and voluntary sectors for over 23 years, where my varied roles and responsibilities in the retail and entertainment industries, have included, coaching, mentoring, training small and large groups, managerial and leadership positions, public speaking, performing arts, teaching and choreography.
My responsibilities dramatically then changed to
"just being retired and quality of life"
But, my brain had other ideas and said
"What on earth are you going to do now??"
Working with and helping people have always been my constant, regardless of the many roles I have had.
So, when I felt able, I began volunteering again and returned to college. This was literally for about one hour a week and only when I was physically and mentally able to. Then, just a mere 10 years later, I qualified as a therapist, and quite honestly, it's the best job in the world.
